Now on its third year running, Bizu’s Macaron Day offers visitors free Macaron de Paris from its Summer Collection, choose from 4 refreshing flavors: Piña Colada, Summer Citrus, Honey Dew, and Reese's.
First held in 2005, Jour du Macaron was started by French patisserier Pierre Hermé as a gourmand event in support of charities. For its part, proceeds from Bizu's macaron sales for the day will be donated to Virlanie Foundation Inc., a French, private, non-profit organization reaching out to street children in the Philippines.
Macaron is a French cookie that is crisp on the outside with a soft crème ganache and ground almonds in the middle. It is said to have originated in Italy in the 1500s then found its way to France. What was just a simple recipe of ground almonds, egg whites and sugar with no filling and flavoring was then transformed in early 1900s by French chef Pierre Desfontaines of Parisian pastry shop and café Ladurée into the macaron we know today, two cookies with a ganache filling.
Bizu introduced the macaron to the Filipino palate way back in 2001. Bizu Groupe founder and CEO Annabel Tanco recalls that very few people know about macarons then, often confusing them with the sweet coconut covered macaroons. Bizu now has 13 macaron varieties and will add 4 more flavors, introducing its summer collection.
Bizu requests people to share their photos and videos doing the Bizu Macaron Kiss on Twitter or Facebook.
Bizu has chosen Virlanie Foundation Inc. to be its beneficiary for its 2014 Macaron Day celebration. Virlanie Foundation cares for children in need of special protection; those who are abandoned, abused, exploited, neglected, orphaned, poor. The Foundation strives to build a better future for those children by "giving back their smiles". It is one of the largest, private, non-sectarian child-caring institutions in Metro Manila, Philippines. Virlanie Foundation has helped more than 14,900 children since its foundation on 1992. 1,198 in 2011 alone, provided 12 homes to street children with food, shelter, clothing, and most importantly love and care.
